FACTBase Bulletin 19 - Perth's Geography of Financial Generosity

This FACTBase Bulletin provides insight into Perth’s geography of financial generosity and looks at the amount given or donated per taxpayer and the average amount given or donated per giver. It compares Perth to other major Australian cities.

Key Findings

• Sydney is Australia’s leading donator per taxpayer at $527, more than double of Melbourne at $225, with Perth lagging considerably behind at %162, followed by Adelaide at $150.
• When this data is adjusted to only include those who donated (and not just all taxpayers), Perth’s donations become on par with Melbourne and above Brisbane and Adelaide.
• The spatial distribution of Perth’s financial generosity for the percentage of income gifted or donated by taxpayers is mostly concentrated around the western suburbs, but also include in pockets of northern suburbs such as Carabooda, Glen Forest, and Woodvale.
• In terms of spatial ‘willingness’ to give, there are 2 ‘belts of generosity’ across Perth: one in the northern suburbs from Mount Hawthorn, Tuart Hill, Dianella, and Mount Lawley, also including Carine, Warwick and Hamersley, and in the southern suburbs from Palmyra to Lynwood.
• While Perth is marginally behind Australia’s two largest cities in terms of generosity, it is clear large parts of the population are willing to share their wealth.
