This Bulletin provides a brief overview of employment and unemployment trends in the Perth metropolitan area over the past two decades.

Key Findings
  • Employment growth and unemployment rate are critical indicators of the performance of local economies.
  • Perth’s labour force continued to expand during 2007-2009 in the global financial crisis.
  • Success of numerous planning and policy initiatives saw the labour force growth in Perth at 225% from 2006-2011.
  • The least growth occurred in the inner suburbs, with some outlying suburbs such as Joondalup South, and Mundaring having little growth.
  • Areas of Perth that had high unemployment in 1991 also had high unemployment in 2011.
