The Committee for Perth releases it's 50th FACTBase Bulletin

The Committee for Perth’s joint venture research project with The University of Western Australia – FACTBase, reaches a significant milestone today with the release of its 50th Bulletin.

FACTBase Bulletin No. 50 examines Perth & Peel’s land use and transport strategies since 1955 as a key input into our Get a Move On! project being undertaken in partnership with RAC.

An extensive number of strategic plans have been released over the past 60 years, below are the three key findings of our analysis of the outcomes of those plans:

• The strategic planning system has facilitated orderly low density growth and car based movement with limited success in implementing strategies to increase urban infill and reduce car dependence.
• Since the 1990’s there has been an aspiration to consolidate Perth’s urban footprint, yet the majority of new housing has been accommodated in outer suburban locations in which most commutes are undertaken by car.
• The barriers to implementing good policy have been due to inherent conflicts within policies, conflicting objectives between agencies, changes of government and community resistance
