FACTBase Bulletin 41 - Generosity: A Comparative View of Perth
This FACTBase Bulletin compares the levels of generosity at the inter-metropolitan scale before analysis intra-city patterns of generosity across the 40 Statistical Local Areas within the Perth and Peel metropolitan region. It uses ATO annual personal income data to highlight the number and total value of gifts or donations made.
Key Findings
- In 2011/12 Perth was ranked the third most generous city in Australia behind Sydney and Melbourne.
- Perth’s incomes rose exponentially post GFC, yet due to matching rising costs of living, the level of generosity did not match this exponential growth.
- In 2012, Perth’s proportion of gifted income increased to 0.45% since 2008 (a 17.95% increase).
- The top 5 most generous SLAs were unsurprisingly Peppermint Grove, Cottesloe, Mosman Park, Claremont and Nedlands.
- A closer examination of the spatial trends in giving reveals that a majority of the SLAs fell in generosity from 2008 to 2012.
- The overall spatial patterns of generosity in Greater Perth is relatively static, with the wealthier SLAs donating more and the less wealthy donating less of their taxable incomes.
