The State Training Board is the peak industry training advisory body to the Minister for Education and Training in WA. As our State's economy grows and diversifies, the vocational and education training system must respond to the changes and needs to build WA's workforce.
As part of the State Government’s election commitment to create jobs and revitalise the State’s training system, the State Training Board hosted a series of forums across Western Australia between August 2017 and March 2018. They hosted three forums in Perth, followed by one on-one meetings with key stakeholders and nine regional sessions and travelled more than 9,000 kilometres by air and road, north to Broome, Port Hedland and Geraldton, south to Albany, Pingelly and Bunbury and east to Kalgoorlie, Merredin and Esperance. The Board also received 33 written submissions.
This resulted in the report Strategies to grow apprenticeships and traineeships in Western Australia which proposes five strategies for the State Government to consider
Jim Walker, Chair of the State Training Board, will discuss the report and the five strategies outlines and how industry, employers and the State and Federal Government can work together to ensure the growth.

Meet our speakers and panellists
Jim Walker
Chair, State Training Board
Mr Walker has worked with equipment dealers supplying construction, agriculture, mining and government and marine industries for 44 years. Mr Walker’s career started as an Apprentice – Diesel/Heavy equipment fitter with Hastings Deering. In 2000, he was appointed Managing Director for WesTrac and progressed through the company to become Chief Executive Officer, retiring from WesTrac in late 2013.
Mr Walker is non-Executive Chairman of Macmahon Holdings, non-Executive Director of Programmed Maintenance Services Group Limited and non-Executive Director of RAC Holdings (WA). He is Deputy Chairman of Seeing Machines, Deputy Chairman of the WA Motor Museum and Chairman of Wesley College Council. He is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and the Australian Institute of Management WA, and held the position of President, AIM WA (2008–2010).
