2019 Passion for Perth Competition

The Passion for Perth Photographic Competition is an annual event and this year our judges from the Reshaping and Revitalising Working Groups, Board members and staff worked through more than 60 entries. Their task was to pick the finalists, an overall winner and a winner under 21 years of age. The 2019 winners were announced at our end-of-year celebrations.

Congratulations to overall winner, Colin Wimbridge, for his image ‘Sunrise over the new Matagarup Bridge and Perth Stadium’ and the under-21 winner, Jasmin Joyner, for her image ‘Natural Authenticity’. Both Colin and Jasmin have received letters of congratulations and prize money of $1,500 and $500 respectively. Colin is a second-time winner of the competition and was delighted to hear the news.

Colin shared the story behind the photo: “The winning photo came about because my partner (Karen) and I just love getting up early to find great spots to take some (hopefully) good sunrise photos around Perth. I remember this particular June morning was quite chilly but we decided we would go have a look down near Matagarup Bridge and Optus Stadium. I always like to get to spots early while it's still dark to find the right spot and set up before right light appears”.

“I had my DSLR set up on a tripod and also set the drone up to fly. As it started to get light, we could see some nice colours in the sky and my partner and I commented to each other how it was looking promising. Promising was an understatement. It was one of the most beautiful sunrise skies we'd ever seen. And to have Matagarup bridge and Optus Stadium as elements to complement the photos was amazing.”

The winning shots will be given as gifts throughout 2020 and will also have pride of place on our boardroom wall. This annual competition captures life in Perth and we are starting to build up quite a collection of images documenting the changing face of Perth.
