The Committee for Perth has thrown its strong support behind the reform of local government in Western Australia.

CEO Marion Fulker said she believes that the city would reap big benefits from the creation of a formal structure to enhance closer co‐operation and better governance at a metropolitan level.

“The current fragmented system of local government in the metropolitan region is hindering the potential for Perth to be a globally competitive, vibrant city,” she said.

In its submission to the Minister for Local Government, The Hon John Castrilli, MLA, the Committee for Perth has urged the State Government to go beyond the call for voluntary amalgamation of local councils and incorporate a structure for regional leadership and co‐ordination in the metropolitan area.

The Committee believes this would enable development and implementation of an integrated vision and strategy for the region, allow for policy consistency and integrated planning and infrastructure.
