FACTBase Bulletin 46 - Commuting across Perth and Peel: Unpacking patterns, measures and policy implications
This FACTBase Bulletin examines interregional commuting across Perth and Peel, including the large fly-in fly-out workforce living in the metropolitan area and working in regional Western Australia.
Key Findings
- LGAs in the Greater Perth region (other than Perth) where jobs outstrip residents are Belmont, Subiaco, Canning, Fremantle, Nedlands and Victoria Park.
- Key residential LGAs which have higher working population than jobs are Joondalup, Wanneroo, Gosnells, Rockingham, Armadale, Cockburn, Melville and Stirling.
- LGAs having the least employment also had the lowest population density and were typically Perth’s wealthiest suburbs, which included Peppermint Grove, Mosman Park, East Fremantle, Cottesloe, Claremont and well as other LGAs of Waroona, Serpentine-Jarrahdale, Murray and Bassendean.
- All sub-regions across Greater Perth have a lower proportion of residents working locally.
- For those sub regions aiming to reduce outbound commuting, employment self-containment is a better measure for targeting progress.
