This FACTBase Bulletin draws on Census data to highlight the demographic and spatial profile of Perth’s 65 years and over population within the 40 statistical local areas (SLAs) that make up the Perth and Peel metropolitan region.

Key Findings
  • Between 1991 and 2001 Perth’s population above 80 years more than doubled.
  • Out of 40 SLAs in the Perth Metropolitan Region, 37 had experienced a growth in the Median age from 1991 to 2011.
  • In 2011, the majority of the SLAs with a proportion of people aged 65 years and older over 15% were in the central and western suburbs of Perth and the central southern suburbs.
  • From 2006 to 2011 the outer SLAs and Perth – Remainder had experienced the most growth in the proportion of people aged 65 years and older.
  • In order to address the challenges to both state and local governments, a more in-depth perspective and understanding of the aging demographic at different life-stages is required.
